She was the first Indian Doctor who was born on 31 March 1865 in Kalyan Bombay Presidency in Britisher’s time. She was married at the age of nine to Gopalrao, about 20 years older than her. When she became a mother at the age of 14 and her only child died within 10 days, she was shocked. After losing her child, she vowed that she would one day become a doctor and try to stop such an untimely death. Her husband Gopalrao also gave her full support and encouraged her.

In 1880 he sent a letter to Royal Wilder, a renowned American missionary, in which he explained Anandibai’s interest in drug studies in the United States and inquired about a suitable position for himself in America. Wilder published their correspondence in the Missionary Review of Princeton. Thodisia Carpenter, a native of Rozelle, New Jersey , read this while waiting for her dentist. Influenced by Anandibai’s desire to study medicine and the support of her husband Gopalrao, he offered her accommodation in America.
